Serial Numbers – Trumpet There are multiple sources for the Vincent Bach trumpet on the internet today. We decided to combine into a single timeline reference to better understand the instrument serial numbers vs. The status of the company. This came about due to the first clarinets producing a tone similar to that of a trumpet. The clarinet itself. That the Bundy logo and serial number.
Bundy is not as popular with students today as it once was. I think this is because of , what was in my opinion a gradual decline in the quality of these horns. Bundy horns that were made in the 1950's era for example are excellent, and some advanced players even play them. The Bundy trumpets of the Selmer - Bach- UMI era in my opinion are of a lesser quality. Bundy - Selmer history:
http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/Selmer.html
Beginning trumpet students today have more options of horns to play than just a few brands like Conn, King , Holton , Olds and Bundy etc.
Many band directors push trumpets such as brand new student Yamaha trumpets for beginning players. By the time students reach high school and college, many of them are encouraged by their band directors and teachers to play Bach Strad trumpets. This is disheartening because in my opinion a Bach Strad is often not the best option for them.
Bundy is a good brand for a beginner trumpet today. Beginning trumpet players tend to desire shiny new silver trumpets, and most would prefer a new shiny silver student chinese trumpet to a Chicago Benge with half the lacquer worn off.
A parent of a middleschooler would be wise to buy a good used Bundy or Olds Ambassador trumpet for about $150.00 or so , rather than to spend about $800.00 for a shiny new student yamaha trumpet (that might only carry that student for about 3 years or so), or $300.00 for a new chinese piece of junk (that in a year or two might be unrepairable). These trumpets could then be used for marching band in hs to protect the students second trumpet from getting damaged. I have seen beautiful Vintage Conn 2B trumpets sell for less than what many band parents spend on a new student trumpet, and to me that is so sad because a 1930's Conn 2B in great condition could be used by that student throughout highschool and college, and if well cared for even for a trumpet players lifetime.
Some band directors encourage new students to rent their first trumpet. This would be a better oprtion than buying a new student trumpet, but over time would cost more than buying a trumpet like a good used Olds Ambassador and paying to have the trumpet serviced. Ether way, trumpet students should be taught from day one to respect and how to take great care of their trumpets. A good trumpet teacher will teach students how to do basic trumpet maintinance.

The first Selmer clarinets were made in 1890. By 1900 Selmer was also manufacturing Alto Clarinets, Bass Clarinets, Flutes, Oboes, and English Horns. In 1904 Henri joined with his brother Alexandre to form H. & A. Selmer. Alexandre was an accomplished clarinetist and was able to help Henri while a clarinetist with the Boston Symphony. Henri died in 1941; Alexandre in 1951. At about 1918, George Bundy retained the rights to American distribution.
While Selmer manufactured Mark VII Alto and Tenor saxes they continued to make Mark VI Soprano and Bari saxes for some time.
